Monitoring gear is only useful where the trouble happens, so the coverage map has to start with Dad's actual route, not with the outlets or the box on the shelf. In a house with two floors, one back door and a bedroom down the hall, each room you leave out is a gap someone will fall into.

Local option: New Plan Care gives families in the St. Louis area in-home help so a parent can stay home: companionship, help with bathing and dressing, meals, and overnight care. Call (314) 405-0887.

Draw the route before you pick a device

On paper, sketch each floor. Mark the bed, the bathroom, the kitchen, the main stairs, the back door, and the chair he sits in most of the day. Draw a line for the path he takes each night from bed to bathroom and back. Those lines are the spots a sensor or camera has to see, and any spot off the line is a guess.

Decide what you need to know

Write down the three events you actually want to hear about: no movement for a set period, a door opening at night, or a fall. Ask each vendor which of those it detects, and get in writing what it does not detect. A motion sensor sees movement in its field, a door sensor sees a door, and neither proves Dad is safe. Do not accept a vague promise that the device 'handles' falls.

Test the coverage against the house

Check the signal path. Ask whether the hub needs internet, whether the sensors need a stronger connection in the basement or the back bedroom, and where the battery backup sits. Put the hub where it reaches the sensors on the route, not where it is easiest to plug in. Ask what happens during a power outage or a failed internet connection, and who gets the alert then.

Set the privacy rule before any camera goes up

Cameras in a bedroom or bathroom are a different decision. Agree the rule with Dad before installation, and write it down: which rooms have a camera, who sees the feed, and whether it is switched off in private areas. Sensors on the path can cover much of the risk without a camera pointed at his bed.

Next move

Sketch the two floors tonight on one sheet, mark the route from bed to bathroom in pen, and count the rooms with no line on them. That gap list is the shopping list you bring to any vendor, and nothing gets bought until each gap has an answer.
